Grand Narratives Reading Group (Charles Tilly)

October 22, 2021 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

In collaboration with Pitt's Atlantic History group, the EMW Initiative is starting a new "grand narratives" virtual reading group. We will meet twice a term to discuss books that set out large conceptual frameworks, starting in the fall semester with Charles Tilly’s Coercion, Capital, and European States, AD 990-1992 (Blackwell, 1990) and Giovanni Arrighi’s The Long Twentieth Century: Money, Power, and the Origins of Our Times (Verso, 1994).

In the spring, we plan to read the two volumes of Michael Mann’s The Sources of Social Power (Cambridge University Press, 1986 and 1993).

The reading group is open to Pitt faculty and graduate students across disciplines. Ten copies each of Tilly’s and Arrighi’s books are available for interested graduate students, free on a first come, first serve basis.

Please email either Pernille (per20@pitt.edu) or Niklas (nef13@pitt.edu) if you are interested in participating.

Date and Time for the two spring sessions will be determined closer to the time and may be in person.
